Learn to write your own ekphrastic poetry through this two day intensive writing weekend, where Bergin will lead workshops and tutorials on the process, using a variety of ekphrastic writing techniques. Using a series of quick-fire, tutor-led writing exercises, you will be invited to respond to visual images in words, and discuss the effects. Embrace this opportunity to write new poems that draw on painterly images and vocabulary.

DAY ONE
11:00 – 12:30 Welcome and Introduction. A talk about Ekphrasis, incl powerpoint. A warm-up writing exercise: follow instructions to write an Ekphrastic poem.
1:30 – 3:00 A series of quick-fire, tutor-led writing exercises where participants will be asked to respond to visual images in words, and discuss the effects. A short homework task will be set for Sunday’s session.
DAY TWO
11:00 – 12:30 A chance to read aloud a sample of your writing from yesterday’s session (optional) and discuss the joys and anguish of ekphrastic writing & writing on the spot. Homework task discussed.
1:30-3:00 Write more new poems that draw on painterly images and vocabulary, with the final series of tutor-led exercises.
