The Festival At A Glance

The 28th Sligo Baroque Music Festival is set to offer an exciting weekend of concerts, workshops and youth outreach performances.

FESTIVAL PASS

The Festival Pass admits the holder to all ticketed events over the weekend of 29 September to 1 October. The Pass is available as a single ticket purchase, so there is no need to book the events individually. The Pass includes Acis and Galatea at the Hawk’s Well, who will reserve seats for Pass holders, but not the free Tradroque concert on Culture Night 22 September.

SHARON CARTY

In this new edition of her fascinating “Witches, bitches and britches” programme, mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty showcases dazzling and dark arias for both male and female roles by Handel, Porpora and others, accompanied by Baroque specialists Claire Duff, Nicola Cleary, Lisa Dowdall, Norah O’Leary and David Adams.

WESTLAND BAROQUE

A French-themed recital with pieces by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Jean-Marie Leclair, and one of Telemann’s Paris quartets. who performed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in June. Westland Baroque (Michael Noonan, flute, Kevin Meehan, violin, Peadar Ó Loinsigh, cello and Laoise McMullin, harpsichord) are a new ensemble based at RIAM who performed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in June.

MEDITATIONS

Three male voices of Capella Mariana, directed by Vojtech Semerad, counter-tenor, sing expressively meditative and at times dramatic works by 17th century French composers, including Charpentier’s Meditations for Holy Week, with instrumental interludes.

SOIREE FOR THE KING

Jana Semeradova, flute, with Hana Flekova, viola da gamba, and Jan Krejca, theorbo, present a diversity of chamber pieces such as were played to entertain the French courts of Louis XIV and XV of an evening, in the atmospheric nocturnal setting of the Gillooly Hall.

SLIGO BAROQUE ORCHESTRA

In a programme comparing and contrasting approaches to the 18th century concerto grosso, Sligo Baroque Orchestra will play works by Heinichen, Fasch and others, in the beautiful setting of the Niland Gallery.

ACIS AND GALATEA

Handel’s delightful pastoral opera Acis and Galatea, with a witty text in English, has nymphs and shepherds, love and jealousy, and wonderful music and song. This fully staged production by Collegium Marianum and Buchty & Loutky is set in a Baroque puppet theatre, where the singers and puppets interact to Handel’s uplifting score played by the full orchestra. We are proud to offer this Baroque jewel as the Festival’s first opera.
