Non-Fiction

Non Fiction (Film Still)

Director: Olivier Assayas
Cast: Guillaume Canet, Juliette Binoche, Vincent Macaigne
107 minutes, France, 2018, 15A

From French auteur Olivier Assayas comes a comedy of manners set in the Parisian publishing world. Alain (Guillaume Canet), who runs a prestigious, 100-year-old publishing house, is involved with a colleague. He is also married to Serena (Juliette Binoche), an actress who is having an affair with Léonard (Vincent Macaigne), an author whose autofiction was, until recently, published by Alain. Meanwhile Léonard’s partner, the lively Valerie (Nora Hamzawi), has little time for Léonard’s indulgences.

Assayas’ satire portrays two couples hopelessly intertwined. They obsess about the state of the literary world. Is print dying? Has blogging replaced writing? Is fiction over? The divide between what they say and what they do allows Assayas’ witty film to question the nature of authenticity.

“★★★★★ Printed books versus e-books, love and infidelity behind the bookshelves, it’s all rather topical in this charming, restrained comedy of manners featuring Juliette Binoche – and indeed everybody else – doing star turns in Oliver Assayas’s engaging drama.”
Paddy Kehoe, RTE.ie

“★★★★ What makes the film so enjoyable is the way that Assayas gently teases out the intersecting lives of these couples without resorting to nasty arguments and acrimonious break-ups … Non-Fiction is a light but tasty French Fancy and a page-turner too that comes recommended.” – Gareth O’Connor, Movies.ie
