Specially re-imagined for The Model’s East Gallery, this is an Irish dance: studio series 1 is a duet for dancer and cello that explores the often invisible interplay between dancer and musician in live performance.
The movement and music created simultaneously through improvisation raises questions about who is leading and who is following. Choreographed by Jean Butler and composed by Neil Martin with design by Frank Conway, the piece reveals an intimate, playful and dramatic dialogue between body and instrument, cello and cellist, cellist and dancer, and ultimately a man and woman.

This performance is part of Undercurrents, Divergent Paths in Contemporary Folk, a new series of music curated by composer and musician Emer Mayock, which will run throughout autumn and winter 2017. The series features a distinct range of contemporary folk artists each exploring their contrasting influences and approaches to song, dance or music; while also challenging audiences’ perceptions of the genre.
