Informal Music Afternoon

Informal Music Afternoon

Sun. 2 Aug. 1pm, via The Model's Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Lorraine Howley, flute
Anna Houston, cello
Aileen Cahill, piano
Felip Carbonell, vocals & guitar
Kaitlyn Ressler, soprano with the Sligo Baroque Orchestra

The August Informal Music Afternoon includes a trio for flute, cello and piano by Friedrich Kuhlau;

A rhapsodie for solo piano;  songs based on texts from some of the greatest Spanish poets of the 20th century; and two contrasting arias from a chamber cantata by Nicola Porpora.

Aileen Cahill will perform a rhapsodie by Johannes Brahms and will also join Lorraine Howley and Anna Houston for a trio that was originally composed for two flutes and piano, and later arranged with cello taking one of the flute parts, an elegant, graceful piece in three movements by the largely forgotten composer Friedrich Kuhlau.

The rest of the IMA programme consists of vocal works, but different in style and origin.

Felip Carbonell with Anna Houston will perform settings of texts by some of  the greatest poets of the Spanish language of the 20th century: Antonio Machado, Raefael Alberti, Miguel Hernandez and Pablo Neruda.

And Canadian soprano Kaitlyn Ressler will sing two arias from the neopolitan composer Nicola Porpora, one expressing desolation and the second a discovered optimism from a chamber cantata that matches the voice with solo flute, strings and continuo.

This is the first time the sbo has performed as an orchestra since the appearance of Covid-19 and, although sadly IMAs are still without a live audience, it feels like a very positive step to be preparing music together again.

Since March we have no income other than the grant from Sligo County Council, and the lack of the proceeds from our normal €5 admission means that our reserves have just about run dry. If you would like to support Informal Music Afternoons in their necessary virtual state, you can donate by using this link:

Your donation will go towards performers’ fees and technical assistance in the production of the videos
