Dirty God

Dirty God Film Still

Director: Sacha Polak
Cast: Vicky Knight, Eliza Brady-Girard, Rebecca Stone, Katherine Kelly
104 minutes, Netherlands, UK, Belgium,Ireland, 2018, CLUB (Unclassified)

Dutch Director Sacha Polak makes her English-language debut in this drama about Jade, a young mother attempting to rebuild her life following a vicious acid attack by her ex boyfriend. The attack has left Jade with life-changing facial burns and as she leaves hospital to rejoin the world, she is still deeply taumatised.  Her young daughter is terrified of her and she can’t escape the whispers and the stares. But Jade is resilient and keeps fighting back, sometimes in silence and sometimes lashing out.  She still loves to party, is unashamedly sexual and has a devilish sense of humour.

Newcomer Vicky Knight, who was badly burned as a child, is a revelation as Jade and gives a raw, powerful performance.

‘’ ★★★★… Watching Dirty God it’s impossible not to think of Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank… subtle and naturalistic in its exploration of self-image.’’
– Tara Brady, The Irish Times

‘★★★★…empowering and ultimately uplifting portrait of a woman.’’
-Mark Kermode, The Observer

‘’ ★★★★…Dirty God is Dutch director Polak’s English-language debut, and it’s an authentic portrait of London. Polak shoots with in-the-moment energy: in hospital wards, at a grime club, in a drab call centre where Jade gets a job to pay for surgery.’’
– Cath Clarke, The Guardian

‘’A stunning debut performance from newcomer Vicky Knight’’.
– Niki Baughan, Sight & Sound
