Post-WWII, Leningrad. Gentle nurse Iya, also known as ‘Beanpole’ because of her towering height, works in a struggling hospital and cares for young son Pashka. While peace has come with the end of the war, there is little peace for those left behind to pull the city and the injured back together. When soldier Masha returns from the front to join her friend, a tragedy leads both women towards actions that will test them and push their friendship to breaking point.

Beanpole is a gentle and intense examination of female resilience, trauma and hope. Visually vibrant with deep reds and greens throughout, this vivid use of colour lifts us beyond some of the starker subjects facing these fragile human spirits.
