On March 21st, artists Kian Benson Bailes and Emma Roche will lead a 3 hour workshop open to local art students, recent graduates, and artists. Part of Songs to the Siren, the workshop takes inspiration from Flann O’Brien and explores “shifting spaces of identity and the other voices we inhabit.”
The title, TRIC, refers to the “tricks” or habitual strategies in our studios. It is also an anagram of CRIT, highlighting the workshop’s focus on a healthy disrespect for authority—including our own as facilitators—and examines the habits we hold on to and the advice we adhere to. An artwork can also hold authority when it looms in your studio, unfinished or badly made.
Participants are invited to bring three things: a failed work, a favourite studio tool, and a piece of unsolicited advice from anyone in their life—a tutor, friend, family member, enemy or stranger. Kian and Emma will also collect anonymous advice via social media ahead of the session. Basic art materials will be provided.
By engaging with ‘failed’ work and shared advice, participants are invited to experiment, collaborate, break and mend the artworks for the duration of the workshop. TRIC is an opportunity to question assumptions, explore process, make something collaboratively and share ideas.
Places are limited and booking is essential.
